CAEP vs AAQEP: choosing an accreditor for your EPP

Educator preparation programs now have an actual choice between two national accreditors: CAEP and AAQEP. They both lead to recognized accreditation, but they ask programs to think about quality in significantly different ways. This article is a high-level comparison, not an ultimate verdict.

Standards philosophy

CAEP's standards lean toward measurement: candidate performance on common assessments, completer impact on P–12 learning, and clear evidentiary thresholds. AAQEP's standards are more developmental: they ask programs to demonstrate continuous improvement in context, with a stronger emphasis on commitments like equity and inclusion as design principles rather than as discrete metrics.

Evidence expectations

Because CAEP's process is more compliance-based and standards-driven, these self-studies tend to be longer, with heavier reliance on quantitative data and disaggregated tables. AAQEP's process is more inquiry-based and improvement-focused, so these self-studies emphasize a narrative case backed by selected evidence. Neither is easy; both require different writing styles and tasks.

CAEP generally requires extensive disaggregated data systems, standardized assessments, benchmarking, and large-scale evidence collection tied directly to detailed standards and components.

AAQEP emphasizes evidence quality and meaningful interpretation over volume of data alone. Institutions are encouraged to tell a coherent evidence-based story about candidate success, stakeholder engagement, continuous improvement, and program effectiveness.

Site visit experience

AAQEP site visits are generally perceived as more collaborative and developmental in nature. AAQEP visits often feel more conversational; reviewers probe how the program reasons about its own improvement. CAEP site visits, especially when measurement on a particular standard is contested, tend to be more evidence-by-evidence. CAEP visits can be intensified by formal accountability processes required. Both are definitely rigorous and rewarding.

How to decide

The best way to decide between CAEP and AAQEP is to determine which accreditor best aligns with the institution's mission, culture, infrastructure, and philosophy of continuous improvement. Institutions that value flexibility, innovation, stakeholder engagement, and equity-centered improvement often gravitate toward AAQEP, while those preferring highly structured accountability systems and standardized compliance models may find CAEP to be a stronger fit. CAEP tends to appeal to institutions and programs with mature, established assessment systems, while AAQEP appeals to those who are smaller, mission-driven, or rapidly evolving as it gives them more room to tell their story.

The best accreditation choice should not be determined by perceived workload, but by which framework most effectively advances the kind of growth, innovation, and continuous improvement the program aspires to achieve.
